Has anyone else noticed the spike in the homeless population of late? I have lived here for nearly 25 years. And NEVER have I seen so many homeless people hanging out in Bend Parks so early in the year.

It seems like when the warmer weather hits, the homeless population gets more visible. BTW - ever notice that there is a high percentage of homeless who have dogs?

Most of the professional panhandlers and lazy discovered long ago that bringing an animal, dog or pet along pulls at the emotional purse strings of the easy targets among us. Bleeding hearts if you will.

Those that throw money at panhandlers are doing none of us any favors and should be told to knock it off.

Itís like feeding coyotes. Itís a nice compassionate thought, but they will keep coming back, and eventully eat your pets, livestock, and sometimes even drag small children away and eat them too.

Our jails are full of ďhomelessĒ that made a living out of pan handling, only to use the money for getting intoxicated, buy drugs and alcohol and living with little pressure or responsibility, many turning to crime, robbing businesses, burglarizing homes, or just make a living out of begging, harrassing patrons etc.

There are churches and other organizations everywhere, and itís been a long tradition in this country for churches and their members to offer assistance, food and shelter to those that are truly in need.

Feel free to give them a hand up, a job, direct them to the local church for shelter, food etc, but do not give them money!

Those that continue to throw money at them only perpetuate the problem making it unsafe for all. They should be asked to stop this destructive behavior immediately.

You could say it's getting pretty bad here. And Bend doesn't have the available resources to handle such an influx either.

As I stated below, it will get worse if those that throw money at them continue this destructive behavior, the problem will only escalate. Meaningless handouts are a magnet.
