This is one of those books I reread compulsively, at least once every six months. If you are at all familiar with The Neverending Story (the first movie, OK, not the second, the second was appalling), this book is by the same author. Only it is very much for adults, not for children.
It's a series of short stories, short-shorts even, vignettes, which in sequence create a sort of conceptual labyrinth in which each one picks up from some element of the previous one. The framing device is the maze of the minotaur. Ende takes much of his inspiration from the surreal paintings by his father, Edgar Ende, to whom the book is dedicated. There's something of Borges evident in it, too. Reading it is like following a series of dreams as they fade and shift over the course of a night's sleep.
Highly recommended. Again, contains scenes that not all parents will find appropriate for children, but it is as much a paean to the imagination as The Neverending Story is. Perhaps more so, simply because it's aimed at an adult audience, for whom imagination may need more of a jump-start. _________________ Niki
