The last few years I've seen the annual Pole Pedal Paddle go from a fun race that 'normal folks' could participate in to a super competitive event lead by people with fancy expensive light-weight bikes, the latest equipment, and special outfits. I'm happy they've added the new 'Retro' category - in this division you've got to use a single-speed bike, wear Converse brand shoes, use a wooden boat, and the other equipment has got to be 30 years old.
Wonderful! Now even a geezer like me can do it - my equipment is old, I'm what some folks would call old - you've got to expect times in this division will be slower - it might just bring some more old fashioned fun back to an event that was sliding in a different direction for the 'uncommon man' instead of plain old Joes.
